Abstract
I am a ceramic artist/educator teaching at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, USA and working in my studio in Fabius, New York.
I believe it was Garth Clark who said that beauty had been kicked out of the art world and landed squarely in the crafts sometime in the 80’s. The crafts, that ugly word that the NY museum has tried to distance itself from, were always interested in beauty, in community and in their own histories.
Pottery and ceramic sculpture are my roots and entry point into art-making I have also found influences in painting, sculpture and architecture. I am interested in the idea of structure as ornament. I want what is visually exciting also to be what physically allows the work to stand. I am interested in the place where the language of the vessel and the language of the body intersect.
