Artist Has Come A Long Way Since Bench Sketch
Native Cincinnatian Chris Felix, one of the countries most talented sports artists, is now open and ready for business, as they say. Felix is working full time as a sports artist in his home studio in Cleves, Ohio, right outside of Cincinnati, and is accepting commissions on a first-come, first-served basis.
A graduate of Elder High School in Cincinnati, Felix has been in the art-making business ever since he won a grade school art contest sponsored by a Cincinnati department store. The contest challenged Cincinnati's aspiring LeRoy Neimans to turn in the best drawing of the Reds player, and Felix's sketch of catcher Johnny Bench took first honors. Felix won an autographed baseball and some Reds tickets.
Felix and his art have come a long way since that childhood triumph. He now specializes in large acrylic paintings on canvas whose accuracy and attention to detail reflect his passion for artistic excellence and love of subject. While Felix is willing to paint any athlete or sport requested by a patron, his first love is baseball and his reputation as a baseball artist is advancing rapidly.

The biggest boost to Felix’s career as a baseball artist so far was his inclusion in the "24 At 75" national traveling show devoted to San Francisco Giants legend Willie Mays, put together in honor of Mays' 75th birthday in 2006. Felix's black and white w/earthtones painting of Mays making a leaping catch against the fence to take a home run away from Ted Williams during the 1955 All-Star Game is a stunning work to behold. It is included in the book produced in conjunction with the traveling exhibit, "Willie Mays: Art in the Outfield".
The painting will also be available to view in person when the "24 At 75" show goes up at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County in Downtown Cincinnati early in 2008.
Felix's work starts around $200 for smaller, less involved works, and if you want a beautiful work of art that conveys your love of the game in a unique way, you should contact the artist and talk to him about completing a painting of your favorite subject.
Unlike baseball cards, which are never unique, original art is a one-of-a kind treasure that gives a collection status and prestige that a collection of nothing but mass-produced items can never equal. Felix can even put you or someone you love in the painting just as he did with his good buddy Andy Poli and Andy’s Little League-aged son.
In a painting he did for a charity auction in Chicago, Felix depicted Cubs great Ryne Sandberg at bat. Then in the crowd in the box seats, he placed an image of Poli, while he positioned Andy's son as a Cubs batboy on the steps of the dugout imitating Sandberg's swing. Such a combining of subjects is the ultimate expression of one's devotions to a team and player, and Felix would be happy to discuss doing a similar inclusion work for you.
