Nature
The animals, figures, and landscape of my childhood are subjects that continually draw my attention. My love for dogs, horses, and wildlife fill many of my art pieces. Trips to places (a field from Cloudland Canyon to the farms of people all around) continue to be sources of my inspiration. If I can capture the grace and beauty of an animal as my Lord created them through His inspiration, then I am most successful.
I refer to my style of painting as “creative realism”, a creative form inspired by nature and wildlife filled with dramatic soft lighting. I have developed my own unique voice as an artist being in a sense self-taught by having the dedication to study Master Painters and Photographers daily. Yet I will not deny the great help of many in my development.

I was born in Dalton, Georgia on November 27, 1972. For as long as I can remember I have loved to draw. My parents always encouraged me when I was drawing as did my brother and sister. Some of my uncles and cousins loved to draw, which inspired me tremendously. From my mother, I got my creative streak and from my dad came my eye for detail and relentless quest for quality in what I do.
I have enjoyed nature and animals since I was a child growing up on a small farm in rural Georgia between Lookout Mountain and the Chattahoochee National Forest. I spent hours growing up riding our horses in the woods surrounding our home exploring and playing Cowboys and Indians with my neighbors. Many a Sunday, in between church services, my dad and I would take walks in the woods hunting for squirrels. Quite often on Saturdays we would be off fishing in some creek or pond owned by a friend. My childhood adventures truly have a very strong influence on the art I paint. I remember loving to draw horses on poster boards for contests in elementary school. I was very proud of my art, but it didn’t always win. That didn’t matter though, for drawing horses that I loved to ride was very gratifying.
My family developed a respect for their horses and mules as they were used once to provide food through plowing fields of vegetables and cotton. My Grandpa Charley “Hoss” Green’s favorite mule was Ole Hat that he kept for many years before trading him away. He loved to tell stories of the mules and horses he had through the years. My Grandpa had a huge influence on my development as a person. His name and character were renowned all around as he drove a road grader and fixed people’s driveways in the county for them.
My art is my way of sharing the magic I find in my adventures and back-country hiking excursions. It is a way to bring rural America to the masses all around the world.I refer to my style of painting as “creative realism”, a creative form inspired by nature and wildlife filled with dramatic soft lighting. I have developed my own unique voice as an artist being in a sense self-taught by having the dedication to study Master Painters and Photographers daily. Yet I will not deny the great help of many in my development. I’m always seeking to internalize anything that will improve my art. The three years I worked for a designer helped me tremendously and I’m forever grateful for the opportunity they afforded me to learn the art market setting up shows and hanging art.
For me it all starts outdoors searching for a dramatic subject that captures my emotion. There is nothing better than a strong subject to start with. I love my freedom to look at the world as creative inspiration and then to express that inspiration in thick impastos known as “chiaroscuro” and transparent shadows on wood boards. It is my goal to put my inspiration of the world on board in just a few brush strokes leaving an air of beautiful freshness revealed by simple design. I start with thin coats of paint building up my rhythm till I achieve a steady thought process which leads to thick and quick applying of paint over a detailed pencil sketch. I use the best oils I can find, Old Holland and Blockx buying in bulk using amber and bees wax as my mediums.
The foremost artist of inspiration for me is the greatest creator of them all, Jesus Christ, in whom I rely for inspiration and ability. Other great influences on my art are Rembrandt, Karl Brenders, John Seerey-Lester with whom I took a class, Frederick Remington, Ray Harris-Ching, Michelangelo, Terance James Bond, Kalon Baughan (dry-brush that I often use), Morgan Weistling (wet into wet that I use a lot), Clyde Butcher, Ansel Adams, and Rob Sheppard who has greatly helped me convey what I perceive in a nature scene to others.
You will see many of my favorite subjects. For me, nature art is a way of sharing a part of the world that I care very much about. I want viewers to discover anew the neat bits of nature that I have discovered in many great locations, from the dramatic places most of us visit only once, down to the special little places that harbor nature right outside your door.
I can remember sitting as a child reading every Field and Stream magazine I could get my hands on to experience the exciting stories the authors wrote each month. I dreamed of how I could possibly move people to experience the wild places that surround us as they caused me to want to fish and hunt as they did. And now I have found my vehicle, painting, which I enjoy immensely. As I grew to love the outdoors more and more it continued to take over the art I produced. Only interaction with clients and just being out enjoying the subjects I paint gives me better satisfaction. I get so excited out exploring that I have to share it with someone and the best way for me to do this is through painting the subjects that speak to me.
I don’t want to simply share these subjects with you. I want to get you excited about getting out and experiencing the magic of your own special locales. Nature is sure to be special to different people in exceedingly diverse ways. One might cherish the smells, another the sounds, yet another the colors and another the forms and shapes. You don’t have to be a master artist or photographer to find your vision of nature. Simply carry a journal and write about your experiences.
The key is to get out and enjoy the great and amazing wilds of the world. The real magic is not the painting, but the interaction you have with nature roving through meadows and deep forests feeling the breezes, the rain, the snow, and the sunshine. Sit amidst the ferns as they bend to the wind. Listen to the call of the birds as they sing peaceful songs in the bright sunshine. “Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these”. Capture your own foggy morning memory in a place of your choice. Just sit and soak in the peacefulness as the daylight begins to peak through the atmosphere sitting upon the landscape memorializing it in your own way whether with a sketch pad, a camera, or a journal. Whatever you prefer, get out and connect with nature.
There are associations that will help you develop your yard into a nature sanctuary. I believe there is a certain restorative power that comes from being outside connected to nature regardless if it is sketching, painting, shooting photos, gardening or keeping a journal. To take in nature, you have to be in nature. Being in nature connects you with the world in ways that no art or photography can. I personally have a daily ritual of watching the sun set. No man can capture it as the Great Master Creator Jesus Christ can. In today’s world and in the future, I believe that connection with the natural world is ever growing in importance. Will we have it to share in the future? What are you doing to keep this most valuable of resources for tomorrow? So whatever your inclinations for my art, www.BoydGreeneArt.com, enjoy it, then get out and create your own experiences. Have fun exploring nature wherever you are!
