Mixed Media & Collage-
Abstract
For many years I was primarily a landscape painter, but about twenty years ago I found my interests were evolving toward a more non-objective approach. In my current work acrylic paint has replaced oil paint as my preferred painting medium, and collage elements have become increasingly important. Color, texture and a structural tension between geometric order and a random playfulness have become the dominant characteristics. The works themselves are typically created in layers of materials and acrylic paint, with surface images and materials partially or fully obscuring the initial layers. In a sense these initial layers are metaphorical of my “forgotten” memories, and this ambiguity of hidden marks and images is as important to the expressive character of the work as is the final surface imagery. I sometimes think of these paintings as interior landscapes of the mind or the psyche, both different from but connected to the earlier exterior landscapes of experience.
