Abstract
Penelope Casey draws inspiration from the stimulus of her surroundings and the cultural exposure of her formative years. Born in Papua New Guinea, lived in the Fiji Islands and now residing in Australia, her portfolio of works catalogue a life spent inspired by the richly diverse offerings of the pacific isles.
Penelope’s Portraiture studies of Papua New Guinean Highland Warriors in ceremonial garb capture the intensity and diversity of a populace once fiercely tribal that now struggles to reconcile the primitive cultural traditions and practices of its people with the realities and pace of the Modern World.
Relocating to Fiji in her early twenties, the penetrating and at times unsettling gaze of the Papuan Highlanders in Penelope’s early works gave way to tranquil and idealized images of a populace living on the shores of paradise. The temperament of the Fijian people and the idyllic simplicity of their daily existence pervade this body of work.
